Young Jurors Wanted: Teaching Kids to Judge and Vote Fairly

Begin with what jurors do. A juror watches carefully, thinks about what the film is trying to do, and compares it with other entries on fair terms. It is not about picking a personal favourite, although liking a film is a perfectly valid starting point.

Build a simple scorecard. Choose three or four qualities, such as story, sound, picture and how the film made you feel. Let each child rate each from one to five and jot a sentence of reasoning. Writing a reason makes the vote thoughtful rather than automatic.

Separate liking from judging. Ask: Did I enjoy this? Then ask: Did it do what it set out to do? A film about a quiet topic can be very good without being thrilling, and a flashy one can be less successful than it looks.

Watch the whole film. Remind young jurors to watch from start to end before deciding. Endings often change how we feel about the beginning.

Talk about fairness. Discuss what to do if a friend made one of the films, or if a film feels unfamiliar. Fair jurors say so and try to judge the work itself, not the people or their own comfort.

Practise at home. Pick three short films, give each family member a ballot and reveal the results together. Notice how often people disagree, and why. Disagreement is a normal part of judging.

Respect the result. Winning and losing are both learning moments. Encourage kids to celebrate the films they voted for, and to be kind about the ones that did not come first. Say thank you. Every film was made by someone who worked hard, and jurors honour that by taking the job seriously.
