Synopsis

Every morning a ballet teacher steps onto her balcony in São Paulo and looks out at Paraisópolis, a favela of 120,000 people she decided to help by opening the door to something the neighborhood had never had, classical ballet, free of charge. She walked the entire community on foot before finding a room barely big enough for a table and a shoe rack, bought the uniforms herself, and held the first audition expecting a thousand children and getting ten. People stopped her on the street to ask why she was bringing ballet somewhere with no sanitation, no paved roads, no electricity, and she kept holding auditions anyway until word of mouth did what advertising couldn't. During each audition she checks whether an eight-year-old can tell left hand from right, and cries afterward for the ones she has to turn away, because the room only fits so many bodies. The training builds toward more than technique, a former student trained as a physiotherapist just so he could come back and adapt classes for children with disabilities, and dancers who arrived without ever leaving the neighborhood have since taken company classes at Juilliard, Alvin Ailey, and American Ballet Theatre in New York, one of them called back mid-trip with a scholarship offer she initially assumed was a joke. Muralists and choreographers now donate murals and costumes to a program that still charges nothing, on principle, because dance has historically belonged to families who could afford private lessons and this one exists specifically to break that rule. Back on her balcony, the teacher still looks out at the same rooftops every morning, only now some of those roofs belong to former students who became physiotherapists, lawyers, doctors, teachers, proof to the neighbors who once shook their heads that this was possible after all.
